Newcastle Eagles have made their second change to their 2025/26 men’s roster, bringing in 6’4 guard Deion Hammond, who last season played in the German Bundesliga for BG Goettingen.

Hammond had a record-breaking college career, averaging double-figure scoring returns in each of his four years at Monmouth University of the Colonial Athletic Association from 2017 to 2021.

“I’m extremely excited for this opportunity to come play for such a prestigious club and do everything I can to bring some more wins”, said Hammond.

“I’ve never been to England, so I can’t wait to experience it and immerse in the culture, and get a chance to play in front of the Eagles fans.”

Head coach Marc Steutel’s latest signing’s last two seasons have been spent in Germany’s top-flight Bundesliga, firstly with MHP Reisen Ludwigsburg and then most recently at Goettingen.

This will be the Maryland native’s fifth season as a professional, having also played in Romania as a rookie in 2021/22. He moved to ZZ Leiden in the Netherlands the following year and helped them to win the Dutch League and Cup, as well as the BNXT League.

As the Eagles prepare to tip-off in their third ENBL season this coming Tuesday night, Hammond will bolster the wealth of European experience in Steutel’s side having played valuable minutes in both the Basketball Champions League with Reisen and FIBA Europe Cup with Leiden.

“Deion is a high-level player who will bring an exciting dimension to our group”, said Steutel.

“He has had a very good career to date, and we are really pleased to get him in an Eagles jersey”.

“We are positive he will be able to add to our group as we continue to aim for our goals this season, and we’re excited to introduce him to our incredible fanbase at the Vertu Arena.”

Club officials have worked around the clock since Hammond put pen to paper so he could make his Super League Basketball debut at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester tomorrow, Friday 17 October.

In a related roster move, the Eagles have parted ways with USA centre Brett Reed after their first four games.

“Brett is an exceptional person who has been nothing but professional and committed in his time with us,” Steutel added.

“We will always be following his progress from here. He leaves with nothing but thanks and best wishes from everyone at Newcastle Eagles.”

Steutel’s side fly into two away games this weekend, with the road game at the Riders followed by a visit to Cheshire Phoenix on Sunday.

Eagles fans will be able to warmly welcome Hammond to Tyneside on Tuesday night when the team tip-off against Dziki Warszawa. Tickets for Newcastle’s first ENBL game of the new campaign are  still available from the box office.
