They may not have played for three weeks on the court but the Seriös Group Newcastle Eagles have not been idle of the court.

After signing point guard Lauren Saiki and forward Tierra Hodges they’ve moved to add another player to the roster with the return of a fan’s favourite.

Guard Rachael Bland has returned to the Vertu Motors Arena to join Matt Newby’s new-look roster for the remainder of the season. The 5’8” guard is a local girl that brings plenty of Women’s British Basketball League experience with Newcastle.

Bland who will turn 33 next month will suit up for her ninth season of top-flight basketball after first playing in The League for Team Northumbria in 2014/15.

Well known for her defensive ability and being a spark of energy within the team, Newby is delighted to welcome her home and to his roster.

“When the option for Rachael’s return came up, the decision was easy. She has had a storied career in an Eagles shirt and has been a long-standing servant of the club.”

“She has come to the floor with an appetite to contribute and approve which is a testimony to her character and highlights her love of the game.”

For Bland who has been coaching in the Eagles Academy set-up it is a chance to prolong her playing career at the Club she feels she belongs with.

“Back in the game and proud to re-sign with my local team. We’ve got an amazing group that’s been putting in the work over the break, gearing up for a strong second half of the season.”

“I’m super excited to be a part of that and I cannot wait to reconnect with the best fans in the Women’s British Basketball League. They’re unmatched!”

The news that Bland has returned to The Eagles nest will be welcomed by the Newcastle faithful and is further proof that the Club is going all out to raise their standards moving forward.

Bland will be suiting up in her familiar shirt tonight at home when the Seriös Group Newcastle Eagles play their first round Betty Cordona Trophy game against Nottingham Wildcats.

Tickets for the game are still available on the box office in advance and on the door.
