It’s been three weeks since the Seriös Group Newcastle Eagles played and lost their last match in the Women’s British Basketball League.
Three weeks to relax, re-group and re-assess before tonight’s first round Betty Cordona Trophy match-up against Nottingham Wildcats. A lot of the squad including American Power Forward Katie Nolan took the opportunity to travel home for Christmas.
In Nolan’s case she really enjoyed the experience but is now back and focused on tonight’s game where she’ll no doubt play a pivotal part in Newcastle’s Trophy tilt.
Currently in her second season with The Eagles and averaging 15.4 points and 9.6 rebounds per game she is cementing her place as one of the toughest covers in The League and one that is crucial to Newcastle’s cause.
“I was blessed with the opportunity to go back and see my family which was amazing”, said Nolan.
“They are so extremely supportive of me so it’s nice to be able to spend time with them. I know the rest of the team felt the same way about being able to travel and see loved ones during the holiday season.”
“But now we are extremely excited and prepared for this game tonight. The energy in the gym this week has been positive and everyone has been putting in the work to make sure we perform well.”
The Eagles had won both of Head Coach Matt Newby’s opening games before their 91 – 76 loss at Oaklands Wolves. Tonight gives them the chance to get back to winning ways as well as progressing in a competition that is important for all.
“I think the break was needed mentally and physically but it’s always tough to come back after a while off. We’ve been training really hard this week to prepare for the game.”
“The Trophy puts the league back on the same playing field. Everyone has an equal opportunity to make it to the final. We are eager to make a good run!”
Nottingham Wildcats started the season poorly losing their first seven league games but their last outing saw them take their first win of the campaign 86 – 72 on the road in Manchester. A surprise result to many but one that shows their pedigree.
They were lead in that game by Valerie Cassidy de Falco with 28 points ably supported by Mari Stewart with 20 points and 13 rebounds whilst Jessica Wayne had 16 points. It’s this trio that The Eagles will have to check and be wary of.
However, Nolan maintains that the game is about her teammates and herself and that they need to ensure their focus is on taking care of their own game.
“We go into every game wanting to be competitive and beat our opponent. We are worried about ourselves and how we play regardless of our opponent. We have to be aggressive defensively and punch first.”
“It’s important to execute on both sides of the floor and play as a team. If we do that then we give ourselves the best chance of winning.”
The Eagles may also have a special surprise in store for their fans for a game that tips-off in the Vertu Motors Arena at 7:30pm and what should be an excellent way to start the New Year supporting the Eagles Women’s British Basketball League side.
