Newcastle Eagles have snapped up one of British basketball’s most electrifying playmakers after kickstarting Jordan Spencer’s top-flight career.

Head coach Marc Steutel has been tracking the point guard’s progress with hometown team Milton Keynes Breakers for the last two years.

And after Spencer spearheaded the NBL Division Two side’s historic trophy triple in 2024, Newcastle swooped to make the 29-year-old their second signing of the summer.

Jordan Spencer brings British and European experience to the club, having played with the Lions and Riders, including the Basketball Champions League with London.

“I first worked with Jordan when I was assistant coach of the Great Britain Under 20 squad in 2013,” said Steutel.

“That team won a silver medal and promotion to Division A. It was a huge achievement and Jordan was part of that group.

“I’m really excited to have him sign with us for the new season.

“His talent and basketball IQ will be a welcome addition to the Eagles and I know he’ll make a positive impact across our Super League Basketball and European North Basketball League (ENBL) season.”

Spencer has represented his country at Under 16, Under 18 and Under 20 level and has long been regarded as one of the UK’s leading hoopers.

After coming through the ranks at Milton Keynes he graduated to the Lions’ top-flight team and last played for London in the 2021-22 season.

But the lure of helping expansion franchise Breakers bid to recreate Milton Keynes’ glory days persuaded Spencer to refocus his career.

And he combined a starting five role with a key position in the local community — inspiring future generations to chase their basketball dreams.

Spencer won the NBL Division Two league title, playoff title and the National Cup with the Breakers earlier this year.

And he picked up the MVP award in the 2024 playoff final — posting a triple double of 26 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists against Team Solent Kestrels.

Spencer enjoyed a stellar US college career with NCAA Division Two outfit Augustana University in South Dakota.

The multi-talented guard bagged 1,686 points and dished up 918 assists Stateside before returning to the UK to pursue his professional career.

“I’m extremely excited to play for such a historic club, having been apart of some great rivalries in the past,” said Spencer.

“I’m looking forward to meeting the amazing Newcastle fans and playing at the Vertu Motors Arena.

“I’ll be bringing league experience to the club with an extremely competitive nature ready to win silverware for the Eagles.

“Being around Champions league basketball with the Lions, I’m hoping to bring some experience for us in the ENBL competition this season as well.

“I can’t wait to get started with the team and have a successful season.”

Spencer joins returning GB star Josh Ward-Hibbert on Tyneside as Newcastle double down on this summer’s ambitious recruitment drive.

And with the franchise confirmed to chase silverware at home and abroad for the second successive season, the Eagles are expected to reveal more key signings in the coming weeks.

Plans for a first-of-its-kind launch event and thrilling pre-season schedule are set to be announced by the club imminently.
