The Eagles faithful in attendance at last Friday’s first-of-its-kind launch event in the Vertu Motors Arena were treated to an extra surprise as a returning fan-favourite Abby Lowe was revealed in the roster.

Signing up on the day of The Launch, Abby Lowe ran onto court to loud acclaim as she confirmed her return to Newcastle for her fifth consecutive season only broken during the 2021/22 season with a brief spell at Durham.

The former Barking Abbey junior graduate who went on to play NCAA Division 1 basketball for San Diego State University is a player that has played for Great Britain at all junior levels as well as having been part of the training squad for last season’s senior squad.

Lowe was one of the offensive weapons that helped drive Newcastle to The O2 Play-Off Final last campaign and over a tough top-level league performance averaged a highly respectable 11.4 points per game.

Head Coach Matt Newby is delighted to have Lowe back on the roster and whilst acknowledging her all-round skills paid tribute to her defensive abilities saying.

“It will be great for see Abby return in an Eagles jersey”, coach Newby said.

“She was an integral part of our 2023-24 unit and was genuinely one of the best perimeter defenders in the league last season. Matching up with some very high level talents and negating their outputs.

“She is strong in the open court and will be key to our uptempo roster, playing at speed is naturally within her game and in the half court she has excellent instincts and reads the defence incredibly well.

“I look forward to coaching Abby again this year and seeing her outputs increase.”

For Lowe it just seemed right for her return to a club she has a great deal of affection for and one she believes is ready to make further progress.

“It feels really good to be back, especially back to a club that is growing so much,” Lowe added.

“The Launch event highlighted the amazing club spirit we have here at Newcastle.”

“This season I am hoping to build on last year both personally and as a team. The roster is shaping up nicely. Matt has done an amazing job, building on a core from last year.

“We plan to play fast pace up the court which is my favourite style of play. We have a lot of talent this year and I’m excited to get on the floor with them.”
