In its first announcement for the 2026/27 season, Newcastle Eagles can confirm that guard Mitch Clarke remains with the club to feature in its Super League Basketball (SLB) roster.

The multi-year term of Clarke’s contract at the club was exclusively revealed at the Eagles’ exclusive season ticket holders event back in March, but now, as head coach Marc Steutel firms up his signing plans for the upcoming season, the Australian’s return can be publicly released.

Last season, Clarke was one of the mainstays of the roster playing in all 32 SLB championship games and averaging 24.2 minutes, 8.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. Statistics that showcase his importance as a vital teammate and importance to the roster.

“Mitch is coming off a really important personal year and should be proud of his transition into the SLB”, said Steutel.

“We all believe in his impact here at the club and he was a consistent warrior last season. He fights constantly and cares about playing basketball the right way.

“He has immersed himself into Newcastle community and we are excited to welcome him back into an important role for this season ahead.

“He has some incredible performances last season and we know he wants to build upon those this year for a much improved team season. I’m excited to work with him again”.

The 6’1″ Aussie guard’s ability to make an impact either in the starting five or from the bench, his tenacity and toughness and defensive prowess saw him pick up the Eagles fans-voted award for Team Player of the Year at the 2025/26 end of season supporters night.

The step up to the top echelon of British basketball saw the former Reading Rocket bring his energy fuelled presence to Newcastle in a manner that impressed pundits, coaches, players and supporters alike.

“It’s super exciting to be returning to the Eagles for season 26/27”, said Clarke.

“After experiencing the ups and downs of last season I can’t wait to get back on court with the team and am looking forward to a successful season with the club.

“I have loved living in Newcastle, it really has felt like a home away from home.

“The basketball community is amazing here and I cannot wait to play in front of our amazing and loyal fans whose support at every game, home and away, was incredible”.

Having a returning player locked into the Eagles ranks for another season shows continuity and will enable Newcastle to hit the ground running on Clarke’s return, with his knowledge of Steutel’s system and the club’s requirements.
