Newcastle Eagles will return the hugely popular sharp-shooter Cole Long for a third season in a row, after the Canadian endeared himself to all on Tyneside.

Long has become a constant force for the Eagles over the last two campaigns and offers further continuity to head coach Marc Steutel’s roster for the forthcoming season.

“I’m genuinely thrilled we have been able to return Cole. When he and I spoke two seasons ago, he was challenged with proving he can make an impact in the role we expect from him here,” said Steutel.

“Cole took that head on and has proven his consistent worth over these past two years. He is such an important player within our group and he cares deeply about the team, the programme, the organisation.

“We wanted to ensure we could lean on him again for this season so to be able to secure his services is such a positive.

“He has my full trust and we want to see him take another jump forward in his game which I know he’ll embrace the challenge.

“He has had many electric moments in an Eagles jersey and I know our amazing fans will be excited they get to see him produce many more.”

The versatile 6’7 forward’s statistics last season showed how important he was to the team and his teammates. In 2025/26 Super League Basketball (SLB) competition, Long averaged almost 29 minutes per game, scored 11.4 points, grabbed 5.4 rebounds and even managed a block every game.

Long proved the importance of his presence at both ends of the floor in the SLB and hasn’t stopped throughout the summer as he is currently suiting-up for Niagara River Lions in his native Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL).

“I think the decision to come back for a third year was an easy one. Newcastle is a place full of passionate individuals that bring positive energy everywhere you go,” said Long.

“To have the same trust and belief from coach Steutel was another factor in my choice. Marc has helped me a lot in the progression of my career and I have the same trust in him to continue doing so.

“The last thing is simply to win. Four finals in two years is something I am proud of and would like to continue doing in Newcastle.

“I’m very excited to be remaining an Eagle.”

More often than not a starter, but equally adept at coming off the bench, Long’s increased knowledge and experience of life in British basketball saw him take on a leading role when called upon in the Eagles’ last campaign.

Eagles fans have seen the forward evolve into a highly-valued position within the club’s structure and Steutel’s system, and are undoubtably now looking forward to him featuring in the season ahead.
