Two games ago the Seriös Group Newcastle Eagles women’s Head Coach Matt Newby talked about having 120 minutes of regular season Women’s British Basketball League to negotiate before the end of season playoffs commence.

With two wins in their last two games the Eagles have negotiated the first 80 minutes perfectly. A win tonight in the final 40 minutes against Manchester Giants in the Vertu Motors Arena would be the perfect way to go into those playoffs full of confidence and momentum.

Looking forward to the game and playing in front of their loyal fans hoping to reward that support, captain Marina Fernandez emphasised the importance of tonight’s game.

“Tonight is key for us to set the tone going into the playoffs. It’s the last home game of the season and it’s only right for us to go out and perform at a high level for the team and for our fanbase. Manchester did not clinch a playoff spot this season but we cannot underestimate their weapons.”

“We must be ready to compete for 40 minutes to earn the win. I think it’s key for us to have a good game overall to head into the playoffs with rhythm and confidence.”

Fernandez continued by looking at the last two wins and giving her thoughts on her team’s efforts.

“Those last two games were must-win games for us to solidify our standings going into the playoffs. So, it was good for us to accomplish that goal. They were bot close games definitely closer than we wanted them to be but a win is a win and you can’t take those for granted.”

“I think the main takeaway from those wins is that mistakes are going to happen. But we have to find a way to make adjustments and not let mistakes compound.”

Way back in October of last year, Newcastle went to Manchester for their first game of the season and came away with a 77 points to 65 victory. A lot of time has elapsed since then and a lot of changes in both camps as Fernandez reflected.

“It will be a completely different scenario for both teams. Both teams have changed a lot since our first game of the season. For us it will be key to stick to the game plan and executing it, ensuring we do not allow them to have second chance opportunities.”

“It will be a game where if we establish ourselves early and control what we can control it should be a fun one.”

It looks like Fernandez and her teammates will face Leicester Riders in their playoff quarter final. A tough side that they lost both regular season game against.

“I think it would be a demanding matchup where mistakes are punished at a high rate. Leicester is a solid team on both ends of the floor and have shown consistency and toughness throughout the season.”

“Its key for us to build momentum this weekend and keep polishing details that will allow us to be competitive during the playoffs.”

It will be a big night for all in the Vertu Motors Arena tonight as the Seriös Group Newcastle Eagles round off their regular season in front of their own fans. Fernandez reflected on the season and the progress thar has been made under Coach Newby.

“Guaranteeing the sixth spot is an accomplishment for our programme. It has been a long season with a lot of change and adaptation. Our team did a great job of staying together through the ups and downs.”

“Our togetherness through the lows is what got us here and now we want to keep going. Having a playoff run would be special and rewarding.”

As ever the Saturday night tip-off in the Vertu Motors Arena for this eagerly anticipated match up is 7:30pm. Tickets available at the Box Office.
