The Newcastle Hoops 4 Health Tournament brought energy, teamwork and community spirit to the Vertu Arena on Tuesday 31 March, with vital support from Newcastle Hospitals Charity helping to make the event possible.
A total of 12 schools and 28 teams took part, engaging more than 224 young people from across the city in a celebration of sport, health and participation.
The tournament showcased the growing enthusiasm for basketball among Newcastle’s young people, while encouraging physical activity and positive wellbeing.
The day began with an exciting round-robin stage played across five courts, featuring 21 fast-paced games. This inclusive format ensured every team had multiple opportunities to compete, develop their skills and enjoy the experience.
Following the group stages, the top three teams from each court progressed, alongside the highest-performing fourth-placed team. These teams advanced through two further knockout rounds, culminating in the selection of four outstanding finalists.
A special highlight of the event was a visit from ‘Fudge the Giraffe’, mascot for the Great North Children’s Hospital, whose presence brought smiles, laughter and an extra sense of occasion for the young participants.
The charity’s support played a key role in delivering a memorable and impactful day for all involved.
Sam Blake, CEO of Eagles Community Foundation said: “It’s fantastic to see so many young people coming together through basketball, showing not only their skills but also teamwork, respect and determination.
“Programmes like Hoops 4 Health are so important in inspiring healthier, more active lifestyles, and we’re incredibly grateful to Newcastle Hospitals Charity for their support in making opportunities like this possible for schools across the city.”
The competition will continue on Friday 24 April, when the final four teams go head-to-head at the Vertu Arena, when Newcastle Eagles have their Super League Basketball home game against Leicester Riders.
Pupils from Benton Dene Primary, Gosforth Central Middle, St Alban’s RC Primary and Walkergate Primary will take to the show-court with thousands of Eagles fans watching them showcase their talents in the semi-finals before the game and the Newcastle Regional Hoops 4 Health tournament grand final at half-time.
