Newcastle Eagles Women’s head coach Chloe Gaynor is delighted to welcome the final piece of her 2026/27 roster jigsaw as Gemma Campbell joins the squad.

Campbell becomes part of the Super League Basketball (SLB) team alongside studying and playing British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) with the Eagles’ performance pathway partner Northumbria University.

Following in her twin sister’s Alex’s footsteps in becoming an Eagle, Gemma is also a product of the City of Leeds Basketball programme, headed up by the Eagles women’s team’s former head coach Matt Newby.

The 5’7″ guard/forward’s credentials and passion for the game have seen her recently be elected president of Northumbria University’s women’s basketball club.

“Gemma joins us while continuing her studies and competition schedule at Northumbria University,” said Gaynor.

“We’re delighted to welcome her into our SLB programme. Having known Gemma for several years, this feels like exactly the right moment to bring her into the squad. Her work ethic has been outstanding, and she has earned the opportunity to showcase her ability at this level.


“Gemma’s character and energy contribute positively to any team environment, and I’m confident she’ll become a fan favourite very quickly. I look forward to supporting her development throughout the season.”

Joining the SLB side presents a real opportunity for the 22-year-old to make her mark and progress her career at the highest level in the UK.

“I’m really looking forward to joining the Eagles and I’m eager to play in front of the great fans at the Vertu Arena,” said Campbell.

“I am excited to start this new chapter of my basketball journey and to meet my new teammates.


“I’m looking to bring some big defensive energy and hype both on and off the court to fuel the team, alongside growing as a player.”

The women’s SLB Championship campaign tips-off on Sunday 11 October against Nottingham Wildcats and fans can purchase both season cards and single game tickets now from the box office.
