Newcastle Eagles and head coach Marc Steutel have confirmed a change to their roster for the 2024/25 season as they announce the signing of 5’10” guard Jared Bynum.
Bynum arrives in Newcastle for his rookie professional season after graduating from Stanford University.
Delighted to sign his first professional contract, Bynum said: “I’m super excited to be joining the Eagles. I’ve been told it is one of if not the most successful teams in the UK.
“The intense defence and free flowing offence will allow me to bring my playmaking and scoring to the team.
“I’ve heard the fans are very passionate in supporting the team and that Newcastle being a very nice city. I can’t wait to there and get started.”
The explosive facilitating guard had an excellent NCAA Division 1 college career, starting out at St. Joseph’s University before switching to Providence University.
Whilst with the Friars he led them to consecutive NCAA tournament play in 2021/22 and 22/23.
In 2022 Bynum was named the Big East Sixth Man of the Year and helped Providence reach the sweet sixteen stage.
Switching to Stanford for his senior year, the Maryland native averaged 6.9 points, 2.2 rebounds and an impressive 5.2 assists per game before graduating in the summer.
Commenting on the arrival of Bynum, coach Steutel said: “Jared is a welcome addition to our roster for this season.
“We felt we needed to add a different dimension to our team and believe Jared’s will bring this.”
Bynum’s debut could be against Sheffield Sharks tonight with club officials working hard behind the scenes to get his paperwork all completed in time for him to be included on their roster for the vital SLB Trophy clash.
Meanwhile in a related move the Eagles have made the decision to release Canadian guard Jaelin Llewellyn.
Steutel paid tribute to the departing rookie professional, adding: “I’d like to put on record our sincere thanks and gratitude to Jaelin and his approach.
“He is an exceptionally professional and incredible individual and I wish him nothing but the best for the future”.
