Newcastle Eagles WBBL head coach Noelia Cacheiro has made no secret that she has been scouring the basketball world looking for players to boost her under-strength but committed roster.

So Cacheiro and the club are delighted to announce they’ve signed new recruit Antoinette Lewis.

Not only that but the 6’1” centre, known as Nette, will suit up for the game against Sevenoaks Suns at Surrey Sports Park today.

“Antoinette has come to give us a necessary rotation inside”, said Cacheiro.

“She is a versatile player who has got scoring instincts so we’re looking at her reinforcing our inside game and help out on our defensive rebounding.”

“Her values as a player are in line with those I try to foster.

“I think she is a real addition to the club and will contribute both on and off the court, and I can’t wait to see her in action against the Suns.”

The 23-year-old will be welcome and timely addition as the Eagles look to build on last weekend’s terrific 69-65 home win over Nottingham Wildcats.

“I’m extremely excited to join the Eagles. I love basketball and being able to play always lights my fire”, said Lewis.

“I hope to bring the sense of determination and toughness needed to help us accomplish our goals this season.

Lewis had a stellar college career with NCAA Division 1 South Alabama Jaguars of the Sun Belt Conference averaging 12.3 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.9 blocks in the 128 games she played, 101 as a starter.

This will be Lewis’s second year as a professional after she helped Targu Secuiesc reach the Romanian Liga National quarter-final play-offs averaging 14.2 points, 11.6 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game over the full season.

“I can’t wait to get out there and show her what I’m capable of. Coach Cacheiro is very supportive and encouraging so I can’t wait to have a coach like her in my corner.

“I think I can bring leadership, toughness, the will to win and lots of positive energy to the team.

“I just enjoy playing the game the right way and having fun.

“I’ve always wanted to visit the UK so having this opportunity just felt right and I’m excited to see what this season has in store.”

Lewis and the fans will have to wait until Saturday 5 November to see her live at the Vertu Motors Arena when Essex Rebels come to town for an explosive bonfire night extravaganza.
