Newcastle Eagles is proud to announce that its Academy players Joseph Osarenkhoe and Mohammed Sangyang have joined its Super League Basketball (SLB) training roster for the upcoming 2026/27 season.

Following in the footsteps of Academy graduates turned senior team stars like current players Sauveur Kande with the Eagles men and Grace Rae in the women’s team, Osarenkhoe and Sangyang have suited-up in the club’s warm-up clashes and will become familiar faces to fans over the coming season.

Head coach Marc Steutel, said: “Both Joe and Mo are really exciting prospects that have progressed through our programme and deserve the opportunity to continue their development with supported opportunities with the SLB team.

“They both have demonstrated a desire to improve, excellent physical tools and a hunger to do their best each time they step on floor.

“There is plenty of room for growth for both of them but with the excellent grounding they have had, supported by our academy partnership with Newcastle College, and we are excited for their future.”

Both players will combined their studies, training and competitive schedule with the Newcastle College Eagles Academy in Elite Academy Basketball League (EABL), following the Eagles Community Foundation and college’s partnership securing a return to the top tier.


Ian MacLeod, Development Manager at the Foundation, said: “Joseph is the third of three brother to come right through our performance pathway.

“This is his u19 year with the Newcastle College Eagles Academy playing in the EABL and the exposure to senior basketball will be a huge bonus to his development.

“He is a tall guard with great size and he has the physical tools to be effective in senior basketball.

“Mo has huge potential and has been a leader for the last two seasons at the College Eagles Academy.


“Defensively he is very versatile and offensively is improving his touch to complement his explosive athleticism.

“Being around great pros on a daily basis will help him develop the habits to ensure he reaches his full, top-tier potential.”

Osarenkhoe took to the court on Friday night against Caledonia Gladiators scoring two points in his first taste of SLB opposition, while Sangyang is expected to featuring in the Sheffield Sharks warm-up clash this afternoon, Sunday 13 September.
