Newcastle Eagles face perhaps their biggest test of the season on Saturday night in the Vertu Arena with the visit of Manchester Basketball. The North West outfit have made a perfect start to their Super League Basketball (SLB) season winning all five games played so far.
Manchester are averaging 95 points scored whilst only conceding 68 points per game and have nine players that are scoring at over seven points per game as well. The size of the challenge ahead for the Eagles plain to see.
However, Newcastle themselves have played good competitive basketball this season and last week’s 83 – 82 win at Essex on the road was a sign of how tough they can be.
“I think it was definitely the most resilience we’ve shown with regards to digging in when Essex took the lead,” said head coach Chloe Gaynor.
“The team did well to battle back and get the win, so it was pleasing to see us work together and execute down the stretch in a tight game.”
There is no doubt it was a vital win in the context of the Eagles season even in these early stages with only five games played. It took Gaynor’s side back above .500 and to a 3-win 2 loss record.
“The win last week I think was important with regards to the season outlook – as mentioned, I think it was good that we played a tight game and got that experience under our belt,” Gaynor added.
“I think we performed better in the second half than we have done in previous games, which also helps build confidence.”
But Manchester are definitely a different prospect. They have clearly set out their stall this season looking for silverware and to establish themselves as one of the top sides in the SLB. Right across their roster they have talent and ability.
“I would think they are the toughest test yet. Caledonia and Manchester are the two unbeaten teams, but they both have different team identities and strengths.
“Manchester have been shooting the ball exceptionally well from 3, and they have strength in depth within their roster.”
“We have to commit to protecting the 3pt line and understanding and applying our scout in order to negate them.”
Games against the top sides in the SLB are where Gaynor wants to see her side tested. She and her players have aspirations of a top four placing in the standings and getting a win against a team like Manchester would be a real step-up for the Eagles.
And whilst their season will not be defined by such games it will give an indication of where Newcastle are at and how they need to take things going forward. It is a game to look forward too and tips-off in the Vertu Arena at the usual time of 7:30pm on Saturday night.
Tickets are available on the box office in advance and on the door.
