Cole Long clawed victory from the jaws of defeat to seal a sensational come-from-behind win at a rocking Vertu Motors Arena.

The Canadian enjoyed a breakout game in Super League Basketball on the back of a volley of thunderous three-pointers.

And a slick Surrey outfit — who enjoyed the lions’ share of the lead throughout — headed home to Guildford wondering just how never-say-die Newcastle pulled off a fabulous four-point win.

It was Long by name, long by nature as the Eagles’ do-it-all swingman poured in six from eight from beyond the arc.

And with Josh Ward-Hibbert back to bolster the ranks with a typically bullish display, the hosts had just enough to sneak home down the stretch.

Long added five rebounds to his game high 23 points before fouling out at the death.

But by then Marc Steutel’s side had finally wrested the advantage from an energetic 89er roster countering short-handed Newcastle with an 11-player rotation.

The visitors forced the Eagles into an early timeout after surging into a 14-6 lead midway through the first quarter.

And Surrey stayed in front at the break as they looked to build on an impressive pre-season run-out on Tyneside.

But Long burst into life after the restart and back-to-back treys opened up a 24-20 lead for the battling hosts.

Ward-Hibbert had already taken his first steps back to full match fitness and there’s no doubt Newcastle are a tougher nut to crack with their talisman on the floor.

The former London favourite — named in Steutel’s Great Britain squad ahead of next week’s double header against Greece — managed 19 minutes on his return.

And Ward-Hibbert came within a whisker of a double double after adding eight rebounds to his nine points.

The 89ers led by eight at the half with starters Mervin James, Josh Steel and Jalen Ray all well on their way towards double figure hauls.

Surrey playcaller Lloyd Gardner had plenty of scoring options at his disposal with nine visiting players bothering the scoreboard.

But the Eagles — still without Darius Defoe and Will Neighbour — have underpinned a 10-4 start to the season with impressive resilience and a relentless will to win.

And Steutel’s men turned the defensive screw after the restart to restrict the 89ers to just 31 second half points and secure a second Championship win.

Long continued to pepper the Surrey basket from all corners of the court but he desperately needed support.

De’Sean Allen-Aikens answered the call — serving up a trademark late surge with some key buckets down the stretch.

And super consistent Mike ‘Money’ Okauru packed the stat sheet with 14 points, nine rebounds, four assists and a steal.

That the hosts outrebounded an athletic 89ers roster 46-39 will have delighted Steutel as he drills down on his roster being more responsive under the glass.

But Jared Bynum’s hoped for impact never materialised with the frustrated point guard restricted to fewer than three minutes as he continues to carve out an Eagles role.
