Brixton Topcats provided a surprise result in the National Cup quarter-final, knocking out Team Northumbria from of the competition after a 63-52 win on the road at the Sports Central on Saturday.

Despite the teams being on opposite ends of the WBBL Championship standings, it was the underdogs Brixton, who took the early initiative and led 18-13 with three minutes left in the opening period.


Northumbria did manage to flip the script in the second period, jumping out to a 36-31 edge before the interval, but Topcats soon found themselves in front again, sneaking ahead 45-44 after three quarters of play.

The fourth quarter saw the visitors go on a 10-2 run to take a 55-46 lead with just under three minutes remaining. Faced with pressure, Northumbria did claw back to make it a two-possession game, but Topcats saw the comeback through, clinching a spot in the semi-final.

Mrashi Karumba had a game-high 18 points, nine rebounds and six steals for Brixton, while Teresa Manigrasso collected 16 points on 6-of-17 shooting for Team Northumbria.
