Newcastle Eagles Assistant Coach Gary Stronach has stepped down from his role after four years on the club’s bench.
The popular Geordie relished the opportunity to return to coaching top-flight hoops in 2021 after successful career at the helm of the Plymouth franchise for 16 seasons between 1994 and 2010.
“Due to family commitments it is no longer possible for me to give 100% to Coach Marc and the players”, said Stronach.
“I’d like to whole heartedly thank Paul Blake and Marc Steutel for giving me this opportunity again this season to coach at the pro level.
“This decision was not taken lightly, at this moment in time my focus needs to be on family.
“I will continue to be in contact with Marc and the team as they progress throughout the rest of the season.”
Bringing his wealth of experience to rebooted Eagles rosters, both under former head coach Ian MacLeod and since then alongside Marc Steutel, Stronach’s contribution had begun to bear fruit, following successful first seasons in competing in Europe and the club’s recent Trophy win.
“Gary Stronach is first and foremost an incredible human being and someone who I have the utmost respect for”, said head coach Marc Steutel.
“His support and contributions for me personally and our club have been invaluable.
“Gary’s decision was made with a heavy heart but one that I understand and support.
“Whilst I miss working with him day to day sharing the experiences we have has been a highlight that I’ll treasure forever.
“On behalf of the whole club I wish Gary and his family all the best for the future.”
The name Gary Stronach is one of British basketball legend, having held the reins of teams in almost 600 games of top-flight action, including over 590 with Plymouth and holding the fort for his native Newcastle.
“We at the Eagles, along with the whole of British basketball, are indebted to Gary for his years of dedication to our sport.
“It has been an absolute pleasure having him become such a big part of the Eagles over the last few years after many seasons on opposing sides.
“Gary has contributed so much to our sport both locally and across the country, his direct involvement day-to-day will be missed, but we know that his on-going support from afar is something that will be hugely valued by Marc and the team.
“Everyone at the club wishes all the Stronach’s the very best and we know it will not be the last we see of Gary and his family around the Vertu Motors Arena.”
