It was the night Seriös Group Newcastle Eagles honoured one of their own as club bosses named the new Ken Nottage stand.

And the men in black celebrated the late, great guard’s impact and legacy in suitable style with a thumping win against Surrey Storm.

Sharp-shooter Nottage would have loved the swarming offensive intensity that underpinned a hugely important bounceback win for Marc Steutel’s men.

And the former Newcastle, Sunderland and England favourite — who co-owned the franchise since the late 1990s — would have witnessed an Eagles roster determined to finish the regular season with a bang.

Nottage, who sadly passed away last November, is now the familiar name adorning the East Stand at the Vertu Motors Arena.

And his family, friends and former colleagues were treated to an exhibition-style performance from the fluid hosts, who head to Sheffield tomorrow one step closer to sealing a top four finish.

Newcastle face three of their closest rivals in the next eight days with clashes against the Sharks, Caledonia Gladiators and Leicester Riders set to have a decisive bearing on the top half of the Championship table.

But Steutel will be delighted with a warm-up win against the Scorchers that showcased the very best of his destructive offensive approach.

Eight players registered double figures as the Eagles hit 62% from the field and drained 12 of their 27 three-point attempts.

Jordan Johnson and Tajh Green both bagged double doubles, while Malcolm Delpeche — who claimed 13 points and nine rebounds — fell one board short of joining his team-mates.

Newcastle outrebounded seventh-placed Scorchers 42-30 and forced 15 turnovers on their way to a huge homecourt win.

And MVP Johnson made the most of regular trips to the bonus stripe, courtesy of an increasingly frustrated Surrey defence, to drain eight from nine from the free throw line.

An inactive Scott Spencer and limited minutes off the bench for big man Will Neighbour will have caused some concern for the homecourt faithful.

But, in truth, neither was needed to make a key contribution on a night when Steutel could afford to rest two players still feeling their way back to full match fitness following mid-season surgery.

The Eagles led by six after the first quarter and extended their advantage to 12 points at the half.

Scorchers pair Andrew Lawrence and Tayo Ogedengbe came off the bench to provide some brief resistance to the Newcastle juggernaut.

But with Green and Rickey McGill swiftly finding their range from downtown, a first Eagles win in four games never looked in doubt.

Delpeche and Josh Ward-Hibbert took the hosts into the break with renewed momentum and the third quarter was a Newcastle procession.

North All Star skipper Larry Austin Jr. set the early tone out of the locker room and even the decision to sit down Green — due to foul trouble — didn’t affect the rampant hosts.

The Eagles were 15 up with 10 minutes to play and Steutel was able to manage the minutes of his leading men down the stretch with tomorrow’s trip to South Yorkshire looming large.
