Newcastle Eagles fly down to Cardiff to take on the Met Archers looking to keep their perfect record under player-coach Chloe Gaynor intact and go into the Christmas break in great shape.
For former Cardiff stand-out Shannon Hatch it’s a special game as she returns to her former stamping ground where she had such a productive spell over three seasons. The Swiss International knows the importance of the game and the need to keep the run going.
“We are definitely feeling good after stringing together three great performances under Chloe’s leadership. We are looking to build on that so that we can go into the Christmas break with another win, which will give us a great chance to qualify for the cup semifinals.”
“I was asked if we had a magic formula bringing us these wins. I don’t know if there is a one. We are just putting in the work and the more time on and off the floor that we have as a team, the more confidence and chemistry we build.”
The experienced Hatch has really emerged as one of the Team’s leader so far this season and is a player her coach relies upon to set the tone. Going into the game she had this message for her teammates.
“I just want us to keep on building and growing as a group! Road trips are always a wonderful opportunity for teams to bond. So, hopefully we can use this last game before Christmas to come together as a team both on and off the court, play our style of basketball, and feel confident going into the break.”
Arriving in Newcastle this season Hatch had big numbers behind her from her previous spell in top-flight British basketball perhaps giving a greater expectation on her. But in this Eagles team she’s one of many offensive weapons in Newcastle’s armoury.
So far her contributions to the cause see her averaging 11.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game an excellent supporting role in a very potent Eagles line-up. Hatch does feel there’s more to come.
“I feel as though I am slowly finding my form and feeling more confident on the court as I adjust to a new team and style of play. I am surrounded by incredible players and coaching staff and I just want to help in whatever way I can.”
Now an Eagle of course and very much looking to help her side to get what would be a vitally important win she does though retain fond thoughts of her time as a Met Archer.
“It will be a bit surreal but very special to be back in Cardiff. I spent three incredible years there where I made friends for life and memories that I cherish dearly. I am very much looking forward to seeing everyone again.”
For Hatch and her teammates, a win in a game that tips-off at 15:15 would take them to a 4 – 1 League record and under the qualifying rules for the Super League Basketball Women’s Cup an almost certain semi-final place.
That would indeed be a great start to the festive period and an excellent early Christmas present for all connected with the Newcastle Eagles franchise.
