It is with great sadness that the BBL has announced the death, after a short illness, of Pete Jacques. Jacquesy (as he liked to be known) was a tireless worker on behalf of British Basketball and there was scarcely a basketball event, over the years, being held that he was not present.
Jacquesy was an ardent Newcastle Eagles fan, who rarely missed a game, both home and away. What made this even more special was the fact that he lived in Doncaster. Most Eagles’ fans will remember Jacquesy for his commentaries on home games and the bugle on away games.
Paul Blake had the following to say about Pete Jacques:-
‘ I received the sad news from Dave Elderkin on Friday night, during our home game. Pete was a massive supporter of North East and British Basketball. I will never forget the legendary phrase ‘here come the Eagles!’ which was so much a part of the history of this club. I will also never forget the bugle at away games!
Pete stood for everything that was good about the sport in this country, he truly worked tirelessly, expecting nothing in return and that is how I and many others will remember him’.
This website and the Newcastle Eagles would like to send our condolences to Pete’s family and wish it to be known that we mourn his passing. May your bugle be forever heard in our hearts, each time the Newcastle Eagles take to the court. Peter, may you rest in peace and the basketball community in Newcastle and the rest of the country will miss your enthusiasm for the game.
In your words, one last time – “HERE COME THE EAGLES” – Peter Jacques RIP.
