Newcastle Eagles have added to their front court power by signing the versatile and athletic 6’7 forward Gus Okafor.

The 26-year-old American-Nigerian flies in to Newcastle after leaving Penarol Mar Del Plata of the highly-rated top-flight Argentinian La Liga.

“I’m really excited to be joining the Eagles and can’t wait to play in front of the amazing fans at the Vertu Arena”, said Okafor.

6’7 forward Gus Okafor joins coach Steutel’s side just in time for their Halloween tip-off against Flyers and next week’s first ENBL away game of the season at Iraklis BC.

“Competing in the SLB is a great opportunity and I’m ready to give everything I’ve got to help the team win.

“I’m looking forward to bringing my experience, energy, and leadership to the roster and being part of something special this season”.

In six games for Penarol the NCAA Division 1 Wichita State University graduate averaged 3.7 points and 2 rebounds per game and shot 50% from the 3-point line.

Okafor had two successful seasons at Southeastern Louisiana University of the Southland Conference from 2020 to 2022 before completing his senior year at Wichita State.

His first season as professional was spent in Denmark with Team FOG Naestved where he averaged 14.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Last season he played for ALM Evreux Basket in France’s Pro-B Division averaging 9.1 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.

Okafor brings experience to Tyneside from across the globe after seasons in Argentina, Denmark and France.

Eagles head coach Marc Steutel’s new recruit has landed in the Toon and could feature in tonight’s tip-off against the Flyers.

“Gus is joining our group at a really important time”, said Steutel.

“He has shown his ability to impact games from the forward position at a high level particularly with his play in France last season.

“His reinforcement and skill set is a welcome addition to our roster and we believe he will be a huge positive over the remainder of the season as we work hard towards our goals.”

Okafor will travel with the Eagles to Greece next week in the ENBL as they look to get a first European win of the season away at Iraklis BC.

The club continues to monitor its playing options. All current players remain in the squad.

Tickets are still available to see Okafor and his new teammates in their SLB Championship game at home to Bristol and can be purchased from the box office.
