Newcastle Eagles closed the gap between themselves and the Sheffield Sharks to just two points at the top of the BBL Championship table thanks to a 70-75 victory over the Cheshire Jets at the Northgate Arena on Sunday evening. In a close game throughout both sides traded baskets for much of the opening period, but it was the home side who took the early advantage in the game to lead 21-20 after the opening ten minutes of basketball. In the second quarter the Jets continued to hold the advantage and extended their lead progressively throughout the second quarter and led by seven points at 47-40 heading into the locker rooms at the half.

In the second half the Eagles began to pull themselves back into the game and outscored their hosts 11-16 in the third period to trim the deficit back to just two points at 58-56 heading into the final stanza. In the final period both sides traded baskets through the early going, but it was the Eagles who took control of the game and lead 62-69 heading into the closing stages. The Jets closed the gap to four points at 65-69 with two minutes remaining, but a Joe Chapman basket took the score to 67-71 and effectively sealed the victory for the Eagles. Reggie Jackson led the scoring for the Eagles with 18 points, but it was James Hamilton who led all scorers in the game with 19 points for the Jets.
