Newcastle Eagles won their third piece of silverware this season on Wednesday night as the north east side sealed the BBL Championship regular season crown without even playing.
Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders’ 96-72 home win against UCP Marjon Plymouth Raiders means that Fabulous Flournoy and his team sealed the title after a league campaign which has seen them lose only three of their 26 games. They have also defeated the Raiders in both the BBL Cup and Trophy finals to keep alive their chances of repeating the 2006 clean sweep.
It is their fifth regular season title, and comes after a 2010/11 campaign which saw them finish without any silverware for the first time since 2004
Eagles managing director Paul Blake paid tribute to his side: “I am very proud of what the team has achieved this year. They have had to dig deep and have won more close games than I can remember, but have managed to get over the line. It’s an amazing bounce back following last season and I am very pleased for Fab, the team and most importantly the supporters.”
Newcastle fans will have the chance to see the new champions in action on Friday evening when last season’s treble winners Mersey Tigers are the visitors
