Newcastle Eagles got back to winning ways in the BBL Championship thanks to an 98-84 victory over Worthing Thunder on Saturday evening.
Both sides traded baskets in the early going, but it was the home side who held a slender advantage after the first period 22-21.
The second quarter saw the Eagles began to stamp their authority with an 11-0 and 15-0 runs to take the score out to 34-54 towards the end of the first half.
The second half saw the Eagles continue to show their experience at this level over their less-experienced opponents, but the Thunder enjoyed a 13-2 burst in the final period to get the score back to 74-85, but the Eagles held on for the comfortable victory.
Jonathon Woods led all scorers in the game with 22 points for the home side, while Trey Moore led the Eagles scoring with 19.
Eagles assistant coach Billy Spragg commented at the end of the game:
“The result and the two points are important to get out of this game.”
“We have got to work hard if we are to maintain the high standards that we set for ourselves and keep going for the rest of the year.”
“This was a key game, and our experience and talent was enough to see us through.”
