Eagles edge ahead in Cup and Championship

Esh Group Eagles Newcastle have plenty to be happy about after taking a first leg lead in the BBL Cup and also seeing their nearest rivals lose ground in the BBL Championship title race.

The Eagles will take a two-point advantage into the second leg following their 77-75 win at Sheffield Sharks on Friday, Darius Defoe and Scott Martin leading the way for the Eagles with 18 points apiece.

“We are delighted to come away with the win at Sheffield,” said Eagles’ player-coach Fab Flournoy.

“Sheffield played really hard and attacked us on the offensive glass throughout.

“Offensively we got boosts from different people at different times and Scott and Darius really stepped up in the second half.

“I am sure the second leg will be another extremely competitive game.”

In the BBL Championship, the Eagles remain top after their 105-93 win at Bristol Flyers on Saturday. Charles Smith led the way with 25 points as the Eagles took their winning streak to 12 games in all competitions.
