Newcastle U14s pull off the upset on the road to City of Birmingham Rockets
Newcastle eagles were aware fully coming into this game that COB were very good shooters. But it was the visiting Eagles that stuck first as Archbold won the tip and Weech found Corkin for the first score of the game. The home team however after quickly realising that their visitors were taking poor quality shots and forcing turnovers in the front court, leading to the home team taking a lead in the first quarter ending in a score of 18-11
The second quarter saw more intense basketball as Weech , Peters and Corkin got to work making use of defensive errors on the COB side holding the home team to 6 points only in that quarter . The first half ended 24-23
The first half review recorded that COB were well on their way to foul trouble as 19 fouls were called on total in the first half at the start of the 3rd quarter saw some improvement in making the home team take harder shots . Devastatingly Donaldson got a 4th Foul mid way through the 3rd Quarter and On the COB Armstrong Wheatle, Ajaie -Morgan and Olajuwan all with 4 fouls the 4th quarter would prove to be an interesting one.
The fourth Quarter saw the Eagles try to capitalise on the foul trouble of COB. With just over 3 minutes to go COB were forced to take out Armstrong and Olajuwan as they fouled out. Eagles looked to close out the game from the line to hold their ground to take the final buzzer and the win 52-57.
U14s Head Coach, Calvin George said: “It was good game, we executed well and stuck to our game plan despite the Physicallity and the fact that there were a lot of fouls called in a lot start stop play . We got into some foul trouble early but its an area that we have been working on all season but a massive turn for this team which has been a long time coming. Very proud of my boys”
