Eagles U14s travelled to Ellesmere port Leisure center to play the Phoenix, New comers to Premier north at the U14s division for this season. The Eagles sponsored by Most sensational this season were eager to get their first game of the season under way. They were the first on the scoreboard but the Phoenix tied the score at 5 each early in the first 2 minutes.
An aggressive man to man full court pressure defense from the Phoenix saw the young eagles panic and forcing the eagles coach call time out to regain their composure. After both teams tied at 11, the injury of eagles player Onyenekwe saw a stop in play and a close to the first quarter of 25 -15
The second quarter saw the Phoenix try to pull away by dominating the offensive glass. And pressure the Inbound A few mistakes on the eagles team saw the eagles down by 23.
In the third quarter, the home team opened up with 10-0 run which forced the Eagles to call a time out. Foul trouble from Corkin forced him to be seated early in the third quarter.
In the 4th quarter lack of team defense and a number of turnovers led to the ball being stolen or inbounded incorrectly. In the fourth it appeared the fight to come back had left the Eagles as they failed to stop a number of drives to the rim. The game finishing with little incident in the fourth as both teams seemed to play with slower tempo in an already decided contest.
The Eagles now play their next game in 3 weeks October 20th at Derby, with enough time to reflect and adjust from the lessons learnt from game one.
Coach Calvin said “We knew this game was going to be tough, however our lack of defensive pressure allowed the home team to set the pace of this game. Lots of lessons to learn from this one and review of the same will be done. But this is a young team with a lot of promise and will get better as the weeks go on.”
