The Eagles were looking to the double over the Falcons. The Falcons are a mid table team just like the Eagles and it was sure to be a close game… The Eagles travelled without starting point guard Themba Yabantu due to illness…
The game started with Eagles first on the board, the home team were looking to exploit the Eagles paint with Plummer a dominant force in the first meeting of the teams… The teams traded baskets for most of the remainder and the period came to a close with the score at 17-14….
The second quarter saw the home team playing in green go on 12-0 run with some great transition offence and they lead 32-18… Eagles called a time out and switched up the defence and this steadied the ship and with some good scoring from Ben Hogg inside and some better perimeter shooting they went into the half time 38-37 down… (21-23)
The 3rd period saw the Eagles concede 6 quick points and this made it 44-39… The visitors in black then took a small strangle hold on the game and in the next 6 minutes they had established a 5 point lead at 51-56… (13-19)
The fourth was set up for a tough 10 minutes and it was the travelling Eagles who edged the first 3 minutes with good scores from both inside and outside attack to lead 54-65… The Falcons however weren’t done as they hit a 9-0 run to get back in the game at 63-65… The last 3 minutes saw both teams try to push on but with the home team not scoring and the Eagles in the bonus they hit 8 of 13 free throws down the stretch along with Hogg inside scoring they took the game with a score of 72-79…(21-23)
Eagles U23 Head Coach Heath said “We came today and played hard both of ends of the floor… Our defence early on wasn’t as good as we would have liked but we changed it up and it proved to be the right thing to do… We travelled with our starting PG/ top scorer but we knuckled down and played some good team offence and got the right result… Our job in taking Plummer out of the equation was great and it has to be said this was the main reason we took the win… We also had all 10 players on the scoreboard….”
