Newcastle Eagles can confirm that the club will not participate in the European North Basketball League (ENBL) during the 2026/27 season.

Following three memorable years competing in European basketball, the decision has been taken to focus all the club’s resources and attention on the upcoming Super League Basketball (SLB) campaign.

The Eagles have enjoyed a remarkable ENBL journey since making their European debut in 2023. Across three seasons, the club proudly represented Newcastle and British basketball on the international stage.

In 2025, the club made history as the first British men’s team to reach a major European final after an outstanding run, while consistently competing with some of Europe’s leading clubs.

“The ENBL has been a fantastic experience for everyone connected with the club,” said Eagles managing director Paul Blake.

“Over the last three seasons we’ve created some incredible memories, welcomed European basketball back to the North East for the first time in 35 years and enjoyed unforgettable nights at the Vertu Arena.

“Reaching the ENBL Final was a landmark achievement and something everyone at the club will always be proud of.

“However, after careful consideration, we believe the right decision for the club is to step away from European competition for this season.

“Our absolute priority is focusing on the SLB, our domestic league, from this September and ensuring we are competing consistently at the highest level in British basketball.

“Competing in Europe remains a priority for the club, this is simply a pause rather than a farewell.

“We’d like to thank the ENBL, our opponents, our partners and, most importantly, our incredible supporters who embraced our European journey from day one.”

The club would like to place on record its appreciation for everyone who played a part in making the Eagles’ European adventure such a success, and looks forward to returning to continental competition in the future.
