It’s ‘The Big One’ on Saturday in the Vertu Motors Arena as Newcastle Eagles take on the Oakland Wolves in a blockbuster of a Super League Basketball Women’s Championship game.

The Eagles sit fourth in the standings with a 7 wins and 3 loss record but the Wolves are the team of the season so far and have won all 11 of their league games so far to have firmly installed themselves as real silverware contenders this season.

But this game is about far more than that as the Newcastle franchise open up the court to all to encourage as many as possible to make their way to their arena for what should be a great night of basketball.

This is about showcasing the women’s professional game and showing what a great side the Eagles are this campaign and how worthy they are of additional support.

It’s a chance to build the crowd and get new fans in so that they see how great women’s games are and this Newcastle team is. Then hopefully Newcastle can get more fans to experience it and hopefully support them through the rest of the season with the bigger crowds they deserve.

“For me, I always look forward to The Big One”, said Eagles player-coach Chloe Gaynor, as she looks forward to the challenge ahead of her team and talked about the occasion ahead.

“It’s an example of what women’s sports should look like and provides motivation in continuing to work to make that the standard.

“I’ll miss not playing in it this year, it’s always great to play in front of a big crowd and makes for a great experience for everyone involved.

“The team are looking forward to the game. It’s the first time we’ll play Oaklands this year and they are undefeated so I think after such a positive performance last week at Sheffield, the team are looking forward to that challenge.

“I think it’s good for the whole league to have big promotional games like this and it’s really positive to see them happening more often. On a club front it’s positive that we’re working towards this being a norm and seeing increasing numbers season on season.”
