The loss of the derby fixtures against Durham Palatinates will be a big miss for Newcastle Eagles fans, but any of dissolved Wearside franchise’s followers considering switching their allegiance north now might have a deal breaker.

Newcastle head coach Chloe Gaynor has made former Durham star Shanique Lucas part of her 2025/26 roster, keeping the guard both in the region and the SLB for her second season as a professional.

Lucas was very impressive in her rookie season at Durham last campaign, averaging 17.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 3.2 steals, second in the SLB, per game.

“I’m so excited to be joining the Newcastle Eagles for this coming season”, said the former Palatinate.

“I’m very thankful for the opportunity to be playing for a great club in front of even better fans, especially coming off such a good season.

“I can’t wait to meet everyone and get to work in the Toon.”

The former NCAA Division 2 Union University graduate has been playing in Australia this summer to keep her skills sharp. Down-under Lucas averaged 11.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists for Central District Lions in NBL One.

Having seen the 5’8” player from Papua New Guinea at close quarters last season, Gaynor knows exactly what she’s adding to her 2025/26 line-up.

“Following an impressive rookie season, I’m pleased that Shanique is joining us for her second season as a pro”, said Eagles player-coach Gaynor.

“Shanique showed her prowess on the defensive side of the floor last season and was rewarded by the league with her nomination into the All-Defense team. We’ll be looking to her to set the tone for us on that side of the floor especially.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how our versatile team will gel and Shanique is key in this.”

The players announced so far for the Eagles hint at a very exciting season in prospect for their ever loyal and growing fanbase.

Friday night’s team launch will be an exciting tip-off to the pre-season build-up and tickets for the fun first chance to meet the teams are available on the box office.
