Proj3kt 3on3 the youth basketball project launched at five of the BBL clubs last October, is a partnership between the BBL Foundation and Sport England, and includes local BBL club Newcastle Eagles. The club have now added regional tournaments to the regular sessions they have been running in the local area. The regional tournament winners will get chance to play in the finals on the 9th of March in front of a large crowd at the Commonwealth Games Arena, which plays host to the BBL Trophy Final.
Proj3kt 3on3 is designed to test ways of engaging with boys and girls in the key 16-19 age group. It uses a programme of 3on3 basketball designed and delivered by BBL clubs like Newcastle Eagles and includes both indoor and outdoor sessions where possible. The project has the backing of world governing body FIBA who are hoping the 3on3 version of the game will become an Olympic sport in its own right at Rio 2016 and see it as an ideal way to introduce young people to the sport in England.
The tournaments for under 18 boys, under 20 boys and under 20 girls will take place at Sport Central Northumbria University Northumberland Road Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 8SG on Friday 15th February 2013.
