Seneca Knight insists the sky’s the limit for fast starters Newcastle Eagles as the men in black continue to set the early-season pace.

Last season’s European North Basketball League (ENBL) top scorer travels north of the border tonight with a ‘no fear’ attitude.

And Knight is confident Newcastle can do the Trophy double over Caledonia Gladiators after a week spent doubling down on dominating the defensive glass.

Knight said: “We’re a super talented group and we just need to fine tune some of our errors from last Friday.

“If we can maintain our offence and tighten up on defence then the sky really is the limit.

“This group comes to play every day and we’re striving to be consistent.

“As long as we prepare the right way in practice then we’ll be ready for whatever this league throws at us.”

Knight was a huge summer pick up for Marc Steutel after starring for Valmiera Glass Via in the ENBL.

The 6ft 6in shooter added five rebounds and five assists to his 19-point haul against Newcastle last season.

And Knight’s taken that hot form straight into Super League Basketball (SLB) — averaging 15 points per game for the Eagles in three Trophy clashes.

Steutel’s men sit top of a competitive North group going into this weekend’s away day double header.

But Knight cautioned against complacency and added: “We can’t ignore the Gladiators’ size and physicality.

“They’re a super physical roster and remind me of some of the bigger teams I played against in Europe last season.

“That said, I know we’ll be fine if we stick to what we do best and stay together this weekend.”

Knight was one of a number of under-sized Newcastle stars under huge pressure against Caledonia’s towering line-up last week.

But the explosive scorer shouldered responsibility on a night when team-mate Malcolm Delpeche stepped up to the plate.

The Eagles will need another Herculean effort from the former Bristol forward tonight and Knight added: “I love Malcolm.

“He comes every single day with the same energy, the same focus and the same work-rate. It was great to see him get that game under his belt.”

Knight may have impressed against the Eagles in ENBL action last season but the former Illinois State Redbird revealed he had to do his homework on the newly branded SLB during the summer.

“I’d heard lots of good things about this league and now that I’m here it’s living up to expectations,” he added.

“I’m looking forward to playing every single team and testing myself every week.

“Of course it’s easier when we have our fans behind us at the Vertu Motors Arena — that’s a massive advantage.

“I’ve never played in front of such a passionate set of supporters in my professional career and it gives me a massive lift as a player knowing they’ve got my back.

“They’re the reason we’re all here and the reason Newcastle Eagles is here. I’m already loving playing for our fans.”

Coach Steutel will make a late call on Canadian forward Cole Long ahead of tip-off at the PlaySport arena, however it is unlikely Will Neighbour will feature this weekend due to an injury in training.

With one eye on Sunday’s trip to Cheshire Phoenix, the Great Britain playcaller faces some tough calls on rotations and minutes in the next 48 hours.
