Newcastle Eagles are on top of BBL Trophy group one after an excellent fourth quarter performance saw them past northern rivals Scottish Rocks 105- 89.
Trey Moore scored the final 10 points of the match, and had 14 of his game high 35 points, in the final period, to lead the Eagles to a hard fought victory. Charles Smith chipped in with 24 for Eagles while player-coach Sterling Davis led Rocks with 19.
Until the fourth quarter the match was tight. After leading 12-5 early in the first the Eagles were pegged back to 30-28 after 10 minutes thanks to Wilbur Johnson’s three-pointer.
Eagles established a seven-point lead at half time (58- 51) courtesy of an early 9-4 start to the second quarter. Rocks closed to within one (71-70) late in the third quarter before Charles Smith’s three gave Eagles a bit of breathing room at 74-70 heading into the final stanza.
A 19-8 run through the middle portion of the quarter put Eagles 95-81 up, but Rocks immediately responded with a 8-0 burst to close to within six at 95- 89 with 1.11 left on the clock.
That was to conclude the scoring for the visitors though as Trey Moore reeled off the next 10 points to seal the win.
Eagles were 27 of 32 from the foul line with Moore a perfect 9 for 9. The guard also shot 4 of 6 from three point range in an excellent all round display
