Recap
Newcastle Eagles 46 – 37 York Eagles
After a two-week break, Newcastle made the short trip away to play York Eagles. The first quarter was very scrappy, with both teams struggling to score despite many attempts. York were quick to get into foul trouble, however Newcastle missed a lot of their freethrow opportunities and couldn’t get a lead against York. The first quarter ended 7-6 to Newcastle.
Newcastle managed to get into more of a rhythm in the second quarter and made some good back door cuts to bag easy points. York were very aggressive with their defence, but soon got into team foul trouble within the first 3 minutes. Newcastle failed to use this to their advantage and settled for outside shots, rather than trying to attack the basket and finish with layups. The teams ended the half with Newcastle up 20-14.
York came out strong in the third quarter and closed the gap to 4 points, before Newcastle went on another run to stretch ahead. Newcastle had a slightly stronger defensive quarter with many steals, but they failed to convert and score down the other end. The teams went into the last quarter with Newcastle up 34-25.
York gave a final push in the last quarter and kept the score to 12-12, but it was too late and Newcastle took the win. A very low scoring game saw the Newcastle Eagles win 46-37.
Assistant coach Selin Straughn said “It wasn’t a lucky day for us, we missed a lot of easy layups and close shots. Opposition was very aggressive on defence and referees didn’t use their whistle easily. Low score but good defence from us. We need to focus more on our transition defence, ball control and quick passes. Overall It was an another good game and Girls really wanted to win.”
