Recap
Newcastle Eagles 90 – 18 Hartlepool Huskies
Newcastle Eagles made the short journey to Hartlepool to take on the Huskies in their first match of the season.
The girls were looking to start their season strong and put on a dominant performance from start to finish. Chloe Laws scored the first basket of the season and got the ball rolling for the team to open with an incredible 18-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Although shorthanded, the Eagles kept the intensity high and pushed the ball looking for fastbreaks. Jessie Dormenyo had a dominant performance and scored a huge 11 points to stretch the lead to 43-9 by the end of the first half.
Newcastle struggled to convert in the half court and mainly relied on their transition to put points on the board. Huskies stepped up in the third quarter and made the Eagles hustle on defence, however the ball wouldn’t drop for them.
Another solid quarter saw the Eagles stretch their lead further and finish the game winning 90-18.
Head coach Totton said “I’m very proud of the girls today and the intensity they maintained throughout the game. There are still many things to work on, like their man to man defence, but I’m hoping this game gave the girls a confidence boost going into the rest of the season.”
Assistant coach Straughan said “The team’s energy was very positive and they are bonding every game and practice. I am very proud of them and every game we play better. We work on our weaknesses and improve our strengths. We will work together for better defence and more team play. It was a great start and I believe this season will be fantastic.
