Newcastle U18s win at home to Charnwood College Riders
Newcastle eagles were aware fully coming into this game that Charnwood college riders were very good shooters. The visitors proved this to be the case as they opened up the first shot of the game with a 3 pointer to score. The home team however after quickly realising that their pre-game scout report covered this very style of play. the visitors pressured the home team to try and take poor quality shots and forcing turnovers in the front court but this would not be the case today as Eagles found a way to break their press with Evbouwman scoring multiple foul and counts. First quarter ended 26-28.
The second quarter saw more intense basketball as Rizza and Linsley got 3 fouls and needed to make their way to the bench. The first half ended 50-59.
The first half review recorded that Charnwood were well on their way to scoring the triple digits but a change in the defensive strategy against them at the start of the 3rd quarter saw some improvement in making the visitors take harder shots . Devastatingly Linsley got a 4th Foul at the start of the 3rd Quarter and Wilson soon got his 4th foul as well. So with 3 players on the eagles side with foul trouble and 4 players (out of a toal of 8) on the Charnwood side with 4 fouls as well, the 4th quarter would prove to be an interesting one.
The fourth Quarter saw the Eagles try to capitalise on the foul trouble of Charnwood. With just over 3 minutes to go Charwood were forced to floor only 4 players as the rest were fouled out. Eagles looked to close out the game from the freethrow line to hold their ground to take the final buzzer and the win 101-95.
U18s Head Coach, Calvin George said: “It was good game, we executed well and stuck to our game plan. We got into some foul trouble early but its an area that we have been working on all season but a massive turn for this team which has been a long time coming. Very proud of my boys tonight”
