Following the stellar close to the 2023-24 season, Newcastle Eagles women’s team has continued to upgrade the level of support for its players with renewals integral to the sustainability, growth and development of the programme and new faces offering new levels of wrap-around care.

Head coach Matt Newby will be joined on the side lines by familiar faces to Eagles fans from the last campaign along with additions joining the backroom staff this summer.

Assistant Coach: Luke Orwin
Sports Therapist: Megan McMahon
Sports Psychology: Tom Lishman
Strength and Conditioning Coach: Murray Bingham
Sports Science Intern: Jessica Halliday
Team Doctor: Graeme Wilkes
Team Manager: Abbie Orwin

“We are making strides on and off the court to strengthen every facet of what we do,” said coach Newby.

“Coach Luke Orwin’s diligence and determination continues to underpin the development of the programme on and off the floor.

“Tom’s and Megan’s impact on our run last season cannot be underestimated or understated both were integral to our performance levels managing maintaining and developing healthy minds and bodies.

“I look forward to their continued high level support.”

The women’s programme, which has been under the Eagles’ wings since 2018, strives to follow in the footsteps of its men’s programme in becoming the most successful franchise in British basketball and the development of its coaching staff and player support structure plays a critical part of that mission.

“Adding a strength and conditioning coach with such enthusiasm and appetite for growth, like Murray Bingham, is great for the team and I feel we are developing something special.

“Murray will be assisted by Newcastle University sports science student Jess Halliday whose genuine interest in learning and the programme is refreshing.

“We also are thankful of the high-level medical support of Graeme Wilkes who is our designated doctor and consultant. Graeme’s long standing relationship with the Eagles franchise is well documented.

“Lastly, the media presence of the women’s programme continues to go from strength to strength on the back of tireless effort from the club’s largely volunteer team of content creators.

“In particular, we are delighted to have the continued support of Abbie Orwin whose dual role as women’s team manager and as part of the Eagles media team is immense and so well received both internally and externally.

Coach Newby and his staff will face their first test against Caledonia Gladiators tomorrow afternoon at 4pm, before their opening home game of the season next Saturday. Tickets are available on the box office.
