It’s Charles Smith Week as all at Newcastle Eagles celebrate ‘The Prince’ breaking through the 6,000 BBL Championship points barrier and in the process becoming the 4th top BBL scorer of all-time and honour the achievement.

Charles Jervon Smith first signed with The Eagles in season 1999/00 after a successful college career with Rider University in NCAA Division 1. His professional career first took him to Venezuela and then Taiwan before he arrived in Newcastle. He averaged over 16 points and 6 rebounds in that first Eagles season.

From 2000 to 2002 he played in Austria, USA and Portugal before returning to The BBL and Newcastle for season 2002/03 where he stayed until 2005. At the beginning of the 2005/06 season Charles signed for the then Scottish Rocks. That spell didn’t work out and he left to go to Turkey.

He played for Efes Pilsen Istanbul for a couple of months and then returned to The Eagles in January 2006. The following season Charles was off on his travels again and had a successful season in Spain’s LEB Silver with Caja Rioja.

But, home is where the heart is and with his family settled in the North East he came home to The Eagles for season 2007/08 and it’s here where he’s stayed since notching up many personal awards to add to the team awards as well as a host of memories and records.
