Newcastle Eagles U23 Men vs Barrow Thorns

NBL Division 4 North February 2, 2019 - 4:00 pm
Vertu Motors Arena

Recap

The young Eagles were looking to get another home win under their belts to consolidate their top of the league against struggling Barrow Thorns… The Eagles were without the injured Chris Linsley and Theo Riley due to work….

The game started with the fast scoring Eagles dominating both ends of the floor as they put 23 points on the board with some great scoring from all over the court… The visitors in red were being shut down in the main by some intense defence as the home side lead 23-10 inside 6 minutes… The last 4 minutes saw the Thorns become of a threat as they edged it 4-10 making it 30-20 at the interval….

The 2nd quarter saw the Eagles in black again score at will with 4 triples and a hatful of field goals as well as some great free throw shooting… Two of the triples came from top scorer Domantas Karpinskas… The Thorns had come out strong at the beginning of the period as they closed the gap to 35-31 by the 4th minute but the Eagles after a time out picked up the momentum and by the half time it was 63-42… The Eagles took the latter part of the 2nd by a score line of 28-11… (33-22)

The 3rd period saw the Eagles switch their defence to a zone as they looked to try something new, unfortunately in doing so they let their standards slip and became lazy… The visiting Thorns took full advantage as their top scorer Stevenson found gaps inside and finished well… The Eagles dropped the quarter 22-27 making it 85-69…

The fourth saw the home side take full advantage of some better defence including a zone press and the visiting guys in red tired a lot… The Eagles again offensively took whatever shot they were given and from the perimeter they were on fire with 7 triples in the final 10 minutes… When Alex Horta hit his 2nd on the bounce at the 6th minute it was 100-73… The Eagles ran amok and closed out the game at 114-82… (29-13)

Eagles head coach said after the game “We played solid basketball in long stretches and the score line and individual points showed we spread the ball around a lot and the Thorns couldn’t cope with it…However we didn’t play hard for 40 minutes and dropping that 3rd period was on us… We will need to be on top of our game for 40 minutes in our next two home games to push onto our target of promotion from D4….”

Eagles Top Scorers- D Karpinskas 25, Rafael Camargo-Blas 23, Alex Horta 17 and Blake Keeble 14…
