Cheshire Wire vs Newcastle Eagles U18 Men

NBL Under 18 Men Premier North November 17, 2018 - 11:00 am
Birchwood Leisure Centre

Recap

The Wire were looking to get a home win on the board against the Eagles who had struggled this season… The visitors arrived with stand in Coach Graham Heath and minus Elias and Nariman due to previous commitments… Coach Miquel was stuck in Denmark with work….

The visiting Eagles playing in white were first on the board as they played with some good transition offence as top scorer Adam Fetherston had 6 of their first 10 points with Joe Moore hitting a good outside shot… In the 5th minute the score was 6-10… The Eagles then traded scores before Sauvuer Kande had 5 points in 1 minute making it 8-15… The home side were then outscored by the visitors 5-7 closing the period at 15-22….

The 2nd quarter was a complete transformation of the 1st as the home team capitalised on some poor finishing and less than adequate defence… By the midpoint of the period it was the Wire in green who had edged ahead 27-25… The next couple of minutes went by until Cameron Wilson hit a downtown shot to make it 29-30… The home side edged the remainder of the period as they went into the break 41-38… (26-16)

The second half got underway and it proved a very low scoring 10 minutes as the teams traded scores with Moore hitting his 3rd 3 pointer and Kande scoring at the hoop… With two minutes to go it was tied up at 49-49… The Eagles then missed some free throws and the Wire scored on the buzzer to lead 51-50… (10-12)

The final 10 minutes saw the Wire come out of the blocks again and the Eagles started to struggle with their own scoring… at the 4th minute of the period it was 59-51… The next 4 minutes saw the Eagles close it up to 66-59… The final 2 minutes saw the Eagles looking to gain possessions sent the home side to line but they held their nerve and with the Eagles failing to convert and opportunities the game was lost as the Wire took it 76-64… (25-14)

Stand in head coach Graham Heath said after the game, “We travelled light on numbers but we played with a lot of intensity on defence and good composure on offence in the early part of the game… The starters gave us a good platform but our bench didn’t really follow this on… I asked the guys to play a more read and react type of offence and they seemed to enjoy this and they never gave up trying to get back into the game… We took two out of four quarters and we competed well… We had some good individual performances and I am sure we will regroup this week and be ready to go again on Saturday….”

Eagles Top Scorers- Adam Fetherston 14, Dan Ridley 13 and Sauvuer Kande 12….
