Eagles come close but are unable to close out on the road to Derby

The game opened with the home team struggling to find the basket in the first 5 minutes in what was a sloppy first quarter though by the end of the first the Eagles switch to a more intense defensive outlook – meant the tide began to turn in their favour, ending the quarter up, 14-16.

In the second Coach George’s young team began to turn the on the full court pressure and producing easy opportunities for Onyenekwe and Osarenkhoe to show their scoring prowess. As the quarter was coming to a close the eagles let Derby back in the game .

The beginning of the third saw Derby continue the onslaught behind a predatory defence which forced turnovers again and again. The eagles could not find a score in the first 3 minutes allowing Derby to go on a 9-0 run to start the 3rd  

The Eagles had their moments in the 4th quarter especially when they went on a 11-0 run towards the end of the 4th . But with Derby fouling at every chance, the eagles were made to earn their points from the line. Game ended 78-71

Coach Calvin George said after the loss “all round good performance today, the team showed up 3 minutes late on offence in the 1st quarter and repeated this in the third but however this game showed all the progress we have made over the last few weeks. With the next two games ahead being at home and prepare we have a lot of work to do.”

Newcastle Eagles u14s boys play Leicester Riders at Rye Hill on the 27th October.
