The first game of the season for the U14 Newcastle Eagles saw themselves on the road against the Manchester Giants.
The opening quarter saw lots of missed opportunities for both teams, resulted in a low scoring first quarter however Manchester jumped infront 9-7.
The second quarter is where the game began to pick up for both teams, some easy scores for Manchester in the half court allowed them to jump either further infront by 5 points mid way through with player doing most of the damage on the offence end. The Eagles responded in the last 2 mins to tie the game 20-20 going into the second half.
The third quarter saw the Manchester Giants gain momentum and take control of the game after they went on a 10-0 run which saw Newcastle take a timeout to evaluate what had just happened. The Eagles managed to repair some of the damage going into the 4th by closing the gap to 8 points.
The last 10 minutes saw the game pick up the intensity on both sides after the Eagles went on their own run to bring themselves within just 1 point with 4 minutes left to play. Impressive defence finished off with some transition offence secured the lead heading into the last 2 minutes. Manchester gained an advantage by capitalizing at the free throw line taking a 2. point lead with 1 minute left. A 3 pointer at the 44 second mark, meant the Eagles had now to secure the win and did so by playing impressive transition defence not allowing Manchester any easy opportunities.
Next week, the Eagles are back on the road against the City of Leeds.
