Newcastle Eagles U14 Girls away to Sheffield Hatters
The Newcastle Eagles made the trip down to Sheffield Hatters for the second game of the season. The Eagles knew that this was likely to be a tough and hard fought encounter.
Newcastle Eagles wearing their white kit started brightly catching the Hatters cold and getting on the score sheet early. The Hatters played a full court press against the Eagles with a high tempo end to end start to the quarter. The Eagles worked hard and maintained a high work rate in what was an even start to the game.
The Hatters slowly started to gain the upper hand towards the end of the first quarter opening up a lead. The score at the end of the quarter finishing 16-5.
Early pressure from the Hatters in the second quarter with the Eagles yet to get going resulted in the score widening. A very high tempo hard play was mainly in the Hatters favour with some late baskets for the Eagles toward the end bringing the quarter to a close 14-7 with the overall score at half time standing 30-12.
The third quarter started fairly evenly however, the Hatters with an aggressive press and scoring a number of successive baskets without a reply opened up a healthy lead. As the Hatters were no longer pressing the Eagles started to gain confidence toward the end of the quarter but struggling to find the finish to some good opportunities. A tough quarter ended 17-4 with the overall score 47-16.
The Eagles started the fourth quarter with renewed purpose and crafting some good open opportunities against a tired looking Hatters side. The Eagles had a number of good chances, free throws and some good baskets in the final quarter of the game and reduced the score deficit wining the quarter 7-13 bring the full time score to 54-29.
A very tough game against a physical Hatters team, who certainly enjoyed the perks of home court, ended in a respectable score line at full-time.
The Eagles have arguably played two of the hardest fixtures this league has to offer with improvement clear to see. A great team attitude saw the Eagles continue to play at a good intensity without heads dropping at any point of the game.
The Eagles have a week off from fixtures then make the journey to Manchester to take on their 2nd team.
