Recap
Both teams were looking to get their league season off to a winning start… The Eagles were looking to build on narrow cup loss last weekend to London from D2….
The Eagles again playing in front of another decent crowd and again missing senior player Aaron Wilson took to the court in black playing the visiting Panthers of Kingston in blue… The visitors dominated the first period as they took a commanding lead of 13-28 including 5 perimeter shots and playing a zone defensively the Eagles found it hard to get into stride….
The second period saw the home team again fail to capitalise on chances created against the visitors zone defence and this was allowing the boys in blue to score on the fast break…. at the 4th minute of the quarter it was 17-36 and then the Eagles hit 5 quick points before the remainder was very even making it 34-46…(21-18)
The 3rd was a similar story for the home team as they again failed to score with any regularity…. By the 7th minute the score was at 42-59… The Eagles then decided it was time to play as they upped the tempo and went on a 10-2 run closing it up to 52-61… (18-15)
The fourth quarter was another close affair with the home team looking to put the pressure on the Panthers…. The Eagles were making slow progress and by the 6th minute they had closed it up to 63-72… The Panthers then called time out but the Eagles continued to push on with 2 minutes to go it was 71-77 after Raphael Camargo Blas hit a downtown 3…. However the Panthers stemmed the flow and held their nerve on the free throw line to close out the game at 76-83… (24-22)
Eagles head coach Graham Heath said “We played solid basketball for 30 minutes and took 3 of the 4 quarters but the first 10 minutes killed us as we just never got going and again we struggled with a zone defence…. It’s frustrating because all this season so far we have failed to play 40 minutes and its been different times in games where this has hurt us… We are a deep team and can play up tempo for 40 minutes but at times we are carrying passengers and that will need to change….”
It will be practice as normal before we head to Myerscough next Saturday for our first away game….
Eagles Top Scorers- Domantas Karpinskas 16, Alex Horta 14, R Camargo Blas 14 and T Usher 10…
