Newcastle U14s win at home against Derby Trailblazers
Pace and understanding how to break down the Trail Blazers offence were U14s and coach Calvin’s main concerns going into this game and was an area that he had worked on with his team in the week leading up to this. When the game started as expected Derby tried to rotate the ball to their top scorers and the eagles punished them with a few quick scores forcing them to take a few lower percentage shots. First quarter finished 23-12 in favour of the home team.
The second quarter the eagles traded baskets with Derby to start but with Weech in full form the visitors had no answers for the home team. In the final minutes of 1st half Sproul hit a big three to keep the home team in play and tried to score with 0.6 on the clock again which unfortunately danced around the rim before not dropping. The first half ended 46-29
The first half scoring was dominated by Weech, Onyenekwe and Peters. Coach Calvin from the eagles needed to make some changes going into the 3rd quarter and make sure the home team makes no mistakes when it comes to defensive rotations as the eagles moved match ups in the 3rd quarter. This quarter ended 61-43. With the home team in foul trouble and the visiting team outscoring them in the quarter, It would all come down to the last one
The fourth saw the Eagles leave to the very end find their offensive intensity and threw away what was an 18 point lead in the 4th quarter allowing the visiting team to get back into the game. With the visitors closing in Onyenekwe took charge helped the Eagles on a 8-2 run to close out the win.
U14s Head Coach, Calvin George said: “A little too close for comfort but my guys did well to stay composed and win. We prepped for this team and made some mistakes of our own in the 4th but for this young team, the exhibited a lot of maturity to take the win”
